Briefing on Climate Master Program September 2, 2008 @ 9:30 am - 12:30 pm Maryland Department of the Environment - Lobby Conference Rooms 1800 Washington Boulevard Baltimore, Maryland 21230 (NOTE: Parking is available in the BLUE LOT on Washington Blvd. and then walk into the building through pedestrian tunnel). You are invited to attend a briefing by the Resource Innovation Group to introduce the Climate MasterT At Home program, a community program helping people to reduce their personal greenhouse gas emissions. This 3-hour interactive mini-training and Q & A session will outline the program's "train the trainers" model, video streams, and other training models, whereby community members receive free or low-cost training through a 10-week course, vastly increasing their climate literacy and preparing them to conduct climate change outreach to other households. The course focuses on easy, low-cost ways to reduce emissions from home energy, personal transportation, food, consumption, waste and yard maintenance. Climate Master trainees "pay back" some of the costs of the training by volunteering at least 30 hours to assist other households in assessing and reducing their carbon footprints, as well as participating in other community outreach activities. The September 2nd briefing will provide attendees with an overview of how to develop and run a Climate MasterT program in a community and will cover the following topics: Program need - why focus on households and businesses in addressing climate change? Program basics - overview of the household Climate MasterT and the upcoming Climate Master at WorkT programs Program outcomes - GHG emission reductions, changes in thinking and behavior for the household program (the business program is still in the pilot phase, so there are no results to share at this point) Designing your program - setting goals, selecting presenters, gathering stakeholders Adapting materials to your region - gathering resources and changing materials Recruiting participants - developing and leveraging networks Volunteer coordinating - various models for managing volunteers Ongoing technical assistance from the Resource Innovation Group The Climate MasterT program is a highly successful model for educating citizens about climate change and engaging them in activities in their households and communities to help reduce local greenhouse gas emissions. Early results have found that program participants reduced their emissions by an average of two tons per person and added a "climate filter" to their decision making processes. You can learn more about the Climate MasterT program by visiting the Resource Innovation Group's website at http://climlead.uoregon.edu . I encourage you to attend and to learn more about the Climate MasterT program.
